Dark Room - Tom Becker

Dark Room - Tom Becker
"When Darla and her feckless dad, Hopper, move to Saffron Hills, Darla hopes it'll be a new start for the both of them. But she stands no chance of fitting in with the image-obsessed in-crowd at her new school. Then one of her classmates is brutally killed when taking a photo of herself. A murder Darla herself predicted in a bloody vision. When more teens die in a similar fashion it appears that a serial killer is on the loose - the 'Selfie Slayer'. Darla alone is convinced that the murderer might not be flesh and blood..." - Goodreads

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book will be published on 10th September 2015

I didn't really know much going into this book, apart from it was about a serial killer and selfies? What? I was intrigued. I thought it would be ridiculous, but it was surpringly nothing like what I expected. It was dark, creepy and chilling. I could see it being a horror movie, I could picture the gory details of every murder scene so clearly in my head. It has to be one of the creepiest books I've ever read.

I definitely think the synopsis for this book is a little misleading, especially to do with the selfies. I initially thought that the killer would strike when each victim was taking a selfie, because of the first murder, and sure others were taking 'selfies' when they were killed too, but not every victim. It turns out, the serial killer is the one who likes to take the pictures of the victims before and after he's killed them. Crazy right?

I didn't really have many issues with this book, writing wise. I thought it was written pretty well, I thought it was gripping and it definitely held my attention.

I didn't really like our main character, Darla. I'm not sure on my feelings for her, but I can't say they're all good. I felt as if she made so many dumb decisions, and if I were in her place, I would have done things differently to come to a better outcome- but maybe that's just how she's supposed to be. I just hate when the characters in horror books/movies/tv shows are so obviously stupid, and you're shouting at the book/screen like "NO DON'T GO IN THERE YOU IDIOT"- there were a lot of those moments in this book and it just gets a bit boring after a while.

Overall though, I really enjoyed this book. I would definitely recommend it if you're into more darker/scary YA, it's definitely one to watch! I rated this 4* on Goodreads.
